A Lifetime Love of Tennis: The Deer Valley Teaching Philosophy

Our Philosophy for Tennis at Deer Valley

At Deer Valley Athletic Club, we believe great tennis programs are about much more than filling courts and teaching strokes.

Our goal is to create an environment where players of every age and level can learn, compete, build confidence, develop relationships, continue to grow in the game and have FUN.

As we prepare for winter tennis on our three indoor courts, we have spent a great deal of time thinking about how we want to use this valuable court space. We don’t simply want a busy schedule. We want an intentional program that serves our members, develops our juniors and gives our teaching professionals the opportunity to truly invest in their players.

A Clear Path for Every Junior

One of our biggest priorities is creating a junior program where there is a place for every child whether they pick up a racquet at four years old or discover tennis for the first time in middle or high school.

Pee Wee’s will continue Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30-5:15 this semester, where tennis is about movement, coordination, learning to use a racquet and most importantly having fun.

Open Smashers (M,W,Th) and Advanced Smashers (T/F) will continue from 3:30-4:30 and will continue to build fundamentals, learn how to rally and beginning to understand how to actually play the game rather than simply hit tennis balls.

But we also recognize that not every player starts tennis at a young age.

Open Middle/High School Tennis program is intentionally designed to provide an entry point for students who may be coming to the game later. A middle or high school student who has never played tennis should have a place where they can learn the fundamentals alongside other developing players without feeling as though they are already behind.

The program will welcome beginners while also helping players who already have some experience continue building their skills. The focus will be on fundamentals, serving, rallying, singles and doubles positioning, scoring, strategy, match play and the skills needed to prepare for school tennis.

Our goal is to help these players progress quickly, build confidence and discover that it is never too late to become a tennis player.

Elite Tournament Prep will provide advanced training focused on technique, tactics, point construction and competition for our tournament ready junior players.

Tennis Is a Lifetime Sport

Our vision doesn’t end with juniors.

This winter, we want to create more opportunities for our adult members to improve, compete and connect with one another.

Our programming will include a combination of drill and play, men’s and women’s tennis, skills and strategy, league preparation, match play and social doubles.

Just getting started?  Meet us on Monday nights for beginner fundamentals and match play with other adults new to the game. Intermediate players meet throughout the week and for our advanced players check out the clinic on Wednesday’s. As we move indoors, we will have even more offerings!

Three Courts. One Program.

Another important part of our philosophy is collaboration among our teaching professionals.

Rather than thinking of each professional as operating independently on one court, our pros want to work together as a teaching team.

At times, three courts may operate as rotating stations: one focused on technical instruction, another on patterns and ball work, and another on competitive point play.

This allows players to experience different types of instruction within the same session and allows us to make better use of our indoor courts.

It also creates continuity. A Deer Valley player should feel like he or she is part of the Deer Valley tennis program, not simply taking a clinic from one particular instructor.

Come learn and enjoy this year round sport; no matter what your skill level is.
