The History of USTA
The USTA began on May 21st, 1881. The purpose of this association was to regulate tennis tournaments to keep them fair and fun! Richard Sears and his cousin James Dwight created this organization after losing a match in their first popular tennis tournament. When they lost, Sears cited that it was because, “…[A]t this time, [tennis ball] dealers here had been selling any sort of ball, stamping them, without any recognized authority, ‘Regulation.’ Hardly any two dealers used the same weight or size,” (Tennis).
This loss inspired the two men to work with Emelius H. Outerbridge, the secretary of the Staten Island Club, to create a standardized set of rules and regulations for the sport. Together, they drafted a constitution for a formal tennis association. The proposal was presented at a lawn tennis convention, where it was met with immediate enthusiasm and support. What began as a disappointing defeat ultimately helped organize, regulate, and popularize tennis—turning it into the widely enjoyed game we know today!
Deer Valley is a part of the USTA Southern league. Teams from all over the south compete in local, state, and sectional championships, with paths to National Championships. Our small town made headway in 2022, becoming home to the 2022 55 & Over 8.0 Mixed State Champions AND the 2023 Adult 65 & Over 4.0 Women State Champions!

Spring League
One of the coolest things about the USTA is the way it brings players together who may or may not play at the same club. It is a way to grow as a player, improve your NTRP rating and meet and find new friends who share the love of this sport.
USTA operates all year long, but Deer Valley truly shines during spring! With the earth defrosting and the sun coming back out, Deer Valley members show up for this celebration of the sport.
Operating from February through May, our Deer Valley teams have consistently made it to states their top tier skills! Teams play singles and doubles matches. When they’re not playing on our home courts, our teams are out crushing it at Lake Hickory Country Club, Cedar Rock and Hickory City Park. Currently our league is full with 11 teams…but that doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the fun! Come on down, grab a drink, and watch your favorite players from the mezzanine!

Deer Valley Athletic Club is a family-friendly – and focused – environment with fitness classes, a full gym, pools, tennis, pickleball, and much more for all ages. Join today or learn more.
